Filter Jug Forms Unearthed During The Iznik Kilns Excavation

Abstract

Large number of pieces with impressed and moulded technique were found in 2015-2019 excavation seasons in the İznik Kilns Excavation which carry out in Bursa/İznik. These pieces, made of red paste, include plates, bowls, jugs, and filter jugs were evaluated according to their form, technical and decorations in various studies. In these studies, the technique and decoration properties of filtered jugs produced in İznik workshops were also emphasized. Moreover, during the 2019 excavation season, characterization studies were carried out using a portable XRF (pXRF) instrument on seven selected samples in order to determine the body, slip and glaze components. Chemical analysis indicated that some of these samples date back to at least the 15th century. In the light of the previous studies, in this article focuses on the form characteristics of molded technique filter jugs and wheel-thrown filter jugs. For this purpose, six excavation finds, whose form can be defined, were selected and these were evaluated together with other excavation finds. As a result, it is evident that the filtered jugs produced in İznik ceramic workshops were produced from red paste in two different methods, were associated with ceramic production traditions in Anatolia in the same period.
