MEMÓRIAS DE CHATEAUBRIAND NO BRASIL

Abstract

François-René de Chateaubriand’s Atala was published in 1801, achieving success in France and in places where it was translated and read. Its influence on authors such as Teixeira e Sousa, Gonçalves de Magalhães, José de Alencar and Machado de Assis, can be stated by ana-lyzing how European Indianism was adopted by Brazilian romantics. Ad-ditionally, in The posthumous memoirs of Brás Cubas, Machado de Assis deals with the works of Chateaubriand, although the references appear in a subtle and truncated mode. The appropriations of Chateaubriand by Brazil-ian writers throughout the nineteenth century enable the understanding of the circulation of ideas and poetics, considering the oscillation between en-dorsement and denial, certification and deletion.
