The role of hydrogels in a wide range of applications stems from its stimuli-responsive properties, but coupling of separate stimuli in hydrogels is not often shown. Here the authors demonstrate the emergence of counterintuitive transient phenomena in a polyacrylic acid hydrogel caused by distinct responses to different combinations of rates and configurations of sequential stimuli.
