Correlation between bullous pemphigoid and type 2 inflammation
Abstract
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is one of the common autoimmune blister diseases that mainly affects the elderly. Most bullous pemphigoid patients have obvious symptom of pruritus, accompanied by elevated levels of serum total IgE, peripheral blood eosinophils, and type 2 cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-13. It was found that a variety of Th2-related inflammatory cells and mediators are involved in the pathogenesis of BP, while Th2 cells and type 2 cytokines are the core drivers of type 2 inflammatory response which indicates that type 2 inflammatory response exists in BP patients. At the same time, the successful treatment of bullous pemphigoid with omalizumab and dupilumab further suggests that bullous pemphigoid is closely related to type 2 inflammation.
