Som Magazine: a source for History of Music research in Rio Grande do Norte (1936-1949)
Abstract
Aiming to add knowledge on information sources and research in the realm of historiography of Education in the State of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil, this study aims to analyze Som Magazine as a primary research source on the History of Music in the State between the 1930s and 1940s. Som Magazine was launched in 1936, was specialized in music and had a quarterly circulation in Natal. Its objective was to disseminate and share local and national information regarding the subject of music Education, as well as to communicate information on artistic-musical productions at the time. Crossing the state's borders, its circulation reached other regions of the country. As for historiographic discourse, this research relied in theoretical landmarks present in works such as Barros (2017; 2019; 2020) and Zicman (1985). Thus, it emphasized their theoretical and methodological considerations related to the use of printed sources, specifically regarding an analysis of Som Magazine. In this paper we analyze the historical aspects of the magazine and its role as a music history information and research source on in Rio Grande do Norte.
