The article deals with the author’s position in Vladimov’s novel “The General and His Army”, The writer reaches a very high level of artistic evaluation of life, He wants to know the basics of life, to understand the motives of people, what are the reasons for victories and defeats?. Why can a victory turn into a defeat and vice versa? The author is interested in historical problems common to humanity. The writer’s commitment to grass-roots mentality is also manifested on another level that is the moral level as such. Throughout the book Vladimov adheres to the principle which he formulated long ago - the first class literature presupposes not the way it is written in but implies the deep meaning behind the words. Striving after the imaginative force, the writer avoids exemplification and authoritarian style. Using not only the literary tradition but also the folklore and mythological methods Vladimov expands the horizons of the narration. The writer sticks to the facts but at the same time he tries to perceive the lines of development that are demonstrated not by the participants of the events - no matter how great their role in those events might be - but by the life itself which is in the historical course as well as in the destinies of individuals.
