The Rincão do Inferno ("Hell's Corner") is a rocky formation of unparalleled scenic beauty, located between the cities of Lavras do Sul and Bagé, on the banks of the Camaquã River. This once hostile place served as a refuge for Afro-descendants who fled the slave system imposed by the region's farmers. Thus, the Rincão do Inferno became part of the Quilombo das Palmas, which is also composed of Rincão dos Alves, Rincão da Pedreira and Campo do Ourique. Currently the local Quilombola community is formed by 40 families who are the guardians of identity, history and tradition. The present ressearch aims to reflect on the Hell's Corner from the perspective of its environmental and cultural heritage.
