The present work is characterized as a bibliographic research about distance education in Brazil and about the importance of tutors as actors in this teaching format. The intention of this article is to investigate tutoring in this type of education, explaining how the distance education landscape in the country is constituted, its particularities such as the use of technological and remote tools, in addition to highlighting how the tutor works, an important pillar for to have a quality EaD. For this analysis, we base our study on authors such as Azevedo (2008), Ined (2003), Brazil (2007), Haag (1990), Pretti (1996) and Souza (2004), seeking to reflect on how the tutor's work is constituted and as this is fundamental in the teaching-learning process, as tutoring directly interferes in the academic life of students, since this professional is responsible for mediating between teacher-student and material-student, in addition to acting as support in times of doubts. With the advances in digital technology, the distance modality is gaining more and more space in the educational scope, providing different and enriching experiences in teaching. Thus, it was realized that this constant need for updating and improvement, aiming at meaningful teaching and training of quality, makes the distance education modality a role connected with the advances in science and technology, and thinking about the diverse specificities of students, both physical, economic, labor, and cognitive is what makes tutoring essential in this process.
