Introduction: The treatment for severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) with Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a hot topic in China. The purpose of our systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of rhubarb gavage combined with external application of miralite in SAP patients, to provide some clues for future studies. Methods: All clinical trials on rhubarb nasal feeding combined with mirabilite external application for treating sever acute pancreatitis were searched. RevMan5.4 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: A total of 732 related articles were obtained in the initial screening. 13 studies were finally included, including 822 patients. The length of hospital stay in the experimental group was shorter than that in the control group [MD=-6.80,95%CI(-8.91,-4.69),P < 0.00001]. the abdominal pain relief time in the experimental group was shorter than that in the control group [MD=-1.82,95%CI(-2.26,-1.39),P < 0.00001]. The first defecation time in the experimental group was shorter than that in the control group [MD=-1.65,95%CI(-2.06,-1.24),P < 0.00001]. The mortality of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group [MD=0.45,95%CI(0.22,0.91),P = 0.03].The subgroup with the period less than one week had a shorter length of hospitalization than that out of one week. Conclusion: Rhubarb nasal feeding combined with mirabilite external application can reduce the time of hospitalization, abdominal pain and distension, and the mortality.Meanwhile, there is no obvious unbeneficial effect. It could be a beneficial and safe treatment approach for SAP.
