This article explores anagnorises in several novels by Cervantes in order to show that these scenes of recognition, beyond reflecting conventional topoi, interrogate the dominant vision of blood in the Spanish Golden Age. The “necessity of inheritance” reflected in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries through the ideology imposed by the purity-of-blood laws, is called into question and substituted by a form of contingency in family ties.
