The present article examines Italy’s position with respect to labour costs and employment in comparison with other member countries of the EEC. First, labour costs per unit of output and the role in the formation of costs and prices are analysed. Changes in exchange rates and their corrective effects on competitively are then considered. The domestic distribution of income in relation to levels of remuneration for wage and salary earners to the total number of employees and to the level of per capita income is also dealt with. Finally, links between wage trends, productivity trends and employment rates are examined in relation to domestic economic conditions. JEL: E24, J30
