The article focuses on the verbs associated with animals’ cries and sounds and tends to prove on the basis of examples from various languages, that, even if initially there is a part of animalization of the lexicon when the target domain of the metaphor is a man, the animal side tends to fade and to neutralize—to the point of losing their expressiveness—, when the target domain is not a man (part of the body, object, natural element). These two paths correspond to two different types of metaphorization (metaphors of resemblance and correlation). The article highlights the three components-sources—the ability to produce sounds, to move and to experience emotions—which are the basis of metaphorizations towards the men’s domain.
