«I'VE SEEN FAMINE END NOW I KNOW WHAT IT IS»: P. SOROKIN ABOUT THE FAMINE IN 1921
Abstract
The article studies the problem of famine from a new angle - from the standpoint of Russian intellectual elite. The eyewitness and participant of the terrible disaster sociologist p. A. Sorokin together with I. P. Pavlov and V. Bekhterev took part in an expedition to study the phenomenon of mass starvation in the Volga region. The emphasis is on practice of interdisciplinary cooperation between scientists in the study of famine. Works, an autobiographical novel, theoretical writings and sociological journalism of Sorokin are of interest not only as a historical source of the whole period. They provide information on the causes, extent and consequences of famine in Russia; the assessments are made. The study features the analisys of how the outstanding scientist interpreted the humanitarian disaster in 1921.
