« Sire, Marly ? » : usages et étiquette de Marly et de Versailles sous le règne de Louis XIV
Abstract
Courtiers’ memoirs, journals and letters are essential to the understanding of court life under Louis XIV by showing how they act and behave depending on the places and context. Marly, as a semi-private and leisure residence, offers a different context from that of Versailles, centre of political power where the king is constantly on show. This raises the question of specifities in matters of customs and etiquette in this particular place. This contribution examines the organization of stays at the residence, the choice of guests and the details of etiquette in comparison to Versailles, in order to determine more precisely the status of Marly.
