This paper addresses the manifold changes that have occurred in the British student housing sector since World War II. Through a chronological analysis of the literature focusing on this topic, it is demonstrated in this paper that many factors have played important roles in shaping the UK student housing sector. From an elitist educational space in the 1960s to a rental niche market of today, student accommodation have experienced pivotal transformations over the last few decades. On one hand, the supply of accommodation for students has been largely influenced by the policies put in place such as the widening participation of students and the scrapping off of young adults’ housing subsidies. On the other hand, the demand for student housing has also changed. Major mutations have been the results of cultural changes, financial constraints, and living aspirations. Additionally, the emergence of studentification processes in several university towns in the UK has shed both a positive and a negative light on students’ presence in urban centres.
