Introduction: Codiaeum variegatum (L.), called as “garden croton,'' is a colourful ornamental plant. Codiaeum species leaves were traditionally used to cure cancer, constipation, diabetes, digestive problems, external wounds, diarrhoea, fever, inflammation, intestinal worms, hypercholesterolaemia, malaria, pain, weight loss and ulcers. This review intends to explore the chemical compounds and their underlying structures, and pharmacological profile of C. variegatum. Material and method: The online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science and Google Scholar) search engine was searched using keywords: traditional uses, phytochemical compositions, antibacterial, antioxidant, antiproliferative, insecticidal, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular and toxicity with C. variegatum and garden croton. The available information was comprehensively studied and compiled. Result: According to scientific research, C. variegatum (L.) is a well-known medicinal plant used for therapeutic and dietary properties. Conclusion: Further research has the potential to pave the path towards the creation of value-added products to address current diseases, given that ornamental plants are an exceptionally rich source of bioactive compounds.
