The history of the word quartonadas offers an interesting route through the history of Spanish vocabulary. Its feature as a loanword, as well as its thematic adscription to the field of clothing, makes possible to certify the persistence of certain social and cultural environments, understood as a source of technical vocabulary. Taking the verb of medieval catalan quartonar(-se) (‘henderse’, ‘rajarse’) as a starting point, medieval Spanish took the adjective quartonado –da, but it had a very short life, because it only appears registered in the literary Íñigo López de Mendoza’s work, who was related to the Crown of Aragon.
