The philosophical value of Cusanus' thinking has been the result of patient investigations that had released its image of hurried and controversial qualifications. In this paper we try to present one concrete aspect of neo-platonic thinking on Nicolas of Cues. In the thing he considers an 'understanding exercise', he points out how he assumes and assimilates the neo-platonic spilling in order to give a better comprehension of an important theme for theological tradition: the sense and the meaning of the word 'beginning' (principium) that is said not only of God, but also of Ghrist
