Early Settling Stages of Igim I Site in the Lower Kama Region (Based on Second Excavation Materials)

Abstract

The paper discusses the materials related to the early settling stages of Igim site, obtained during archaeological surveys of this monument located in the Menzelinsky District of the Republic of Tatarstan. The site was discovered in 1958 by an archaeological group under the supervision of A. Kh. Khalikov. In 1970 excavations were carried out at the site under the leadership of P. N. Starostin and R. S. Gabiashev. The excavations allowed to identify a number of chronological stages in the settlement. The earliest settling stage of the site is associated with the carriers of the Kama Neolithic culture. It is supported by an expressive ceramic complex of this culture discovered in excavation 2. The ceramic complex of the carriers of the Russian-Azibey type of ceramics is not inferior in terms of expressiveness. They are possibly associated with the second stage of the site’s operation. Presumably, the settling of the carriers of Novoilyinskaya culture at Igim site dates back to a somewhat later period. The ceramic complex of this culture demonstrates the third settlement stage. When analyzing the concerned ceramic complexes from excavation 2, the author lists their main cultural features, determines the stereotypes appearing during the manufacture of clay ware, and identifies the chronological points of the complexes.
