In Brazil, one of the main causes of the loss of biodiversity is the modification of habitats due to the conversion of the natural landscape to the agricultural one. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the temporal dynamics of land use and cover of the State Environmental Protection Area of Rio Pandeiros over a period of 20 years (1995 and 2015) to understand the changes that occurred in the protected area landscape since its inception in 1995. Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were used to map the land use and cover for environmental characterization. This analysis allowed the identification of a reduction in native vegetation over time due to the expansion of some agricultural activities, such as pasture. This loss of native vegetation along with the advancement of agricultural activities exposes this Sustainable Use Conservation Unit to susceptible environmental impacts and significant loss of biodiversity.
