Artistic space of the novel by Mykola Ustiyanovych "Revenge of the Verkhovynets" : folklore and ethnographic reminiscences
Abstract
The article analyzes the "topos" as a geographical definition of the territory of the village of Rozhanka, where the main events of the story unfold. It was found that the romantic writer in the literary text focused on folklore and tradition, microtoponymy and receptive vision of the rural environment. Several topos levels have been classified: village, mountains and gorges, valleys and partially mentioned outside toponyms. It is established that the locus, i.e. the image of the environment, forms a unity with man. The writer focused on real residents with well-known surnames in this village — Nalyvaiko, Kozhan, Meduliak, Dronyshynets. The significance and role of folklore and ethnographic elements as intertextual components in the creation of the text of the story are clarified. Reminiscence as the most common form of intertextual communication is manifested in the story in the tracing of fights in the family, community, attitudes toward the poor and orphans; the relationship between the community and the priest, as well as in the depiction of the main occupations of the Carpathian inhabitants, observance of customs and rites. Folklore and ethnographic reminiscences of the story at the level of the theme are manifested in a balanced selection of epigraphs to each of the chapters, mostly from the kolomyiкa repertoire, which still exists in this area. It is concluded that the writer accurately outlined the area ofthe village and presented the actual specific landscapes. The toposmanifested in the concretization of the concept itself as a locus — the image of the environment in unity with the actions, feelings and deeds of man.
