Based on Folklore Theories, New Findings on the History of the TRNC-Gelincik (Vasili) Village / Halkbilimi Kuramları Bağlamında KKTC-Gelincik (Vasili) Köyü’nün Tarihi Üzerine Yeni Bilgiler
Abstract
The aim of this study is to reveal the history and folklore of the Gelincik (Vasili) village located in the Iskele District in the TRNC utilizing the Historical Reconstruction Theory and Performance Theories as well asinformation I have discovered from an interdisciplinary perspective, based on oral and written sources. It is known that Vasili, which has a Greek name, was a Greek town before and after the Ottoman conquest. Using the text-texture-context model, which is a triple research model of the History Reconstruction Theory and Performance Theory, was used in the collection of the data and the written sources were scanned using the descriptive scanning method. The collected information was analyzed using the content analysis method. With the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus, there is an intense increase in the Turkish population, which dominates until 1878. As of 1878, both the Ottoman Empire’s entry into a period of decline and the political, economic and historical events on the island of Cyprus led to a variety of changes, especially in the demographic structures of the cities and villages. The causes and consequences of these changes continue to be investigated by social scientists from multiple and different perspectives. As a result of my first examination of the 1883 Kitchener map of Cyprus and the results of the 1831 Ottoman Cyprus census, I have concluded that the Gelincik (Vasili) village, which was known as a Greek village, was actually a Turkish village. Thereupon, I reconstructed the Turkish history of the village, based on both written and oral data, and evaluated the reasons for the departure of the Turkish population from the village in 1958, the settlement of the Greek population in the village, and the issues related to Turkish folklore in the village, using the content analysis method with this new data. what problem? no problem statement was indicated... is the study’s aim the problem?
