The Newspaper Narodnia Volia (1917-1919) as an Object of Sourse Research on the History and Culture of National Memory during the Central Rada, the Ukrainian State, and the Directorate of the UPR period (on Rare Newspapers Collection of V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine)
Abstract
The purpose of the research is, grounding on the source-based analysis of the content of the Kyiv newspaper Narodnia Volya (1917-1919), to find out the informative possibilities of the publication in order to study the problems of the history and culture of national memory during the days of the Central Rada, the Ukrainian State, and the Directorate of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. The methodology of the research is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity and systematicity. For their implementation, historical-source-scientific, problem thematic and statistical methods were used. Systematization of newspaper publications was carried out, their subject matter, content, composition of authors, and genre palette were revealed. The author researched all issues of newspapers (almost 400 issues). The novelty is in the very fact that the presented research is the first comprehensive historical and source one in which the problems of the history and culture of the national memory of the Ukrainian people are highlighted, using materials of the newspaper Narodnia Volya. The quantitative methods were not just applied to the materials of the newspaper Narodnia Volya, but improved. Conclusions. A comprehensive analysis of the thematic orientation, genre diver sity of publications, and authorship made it possible to establish the role of Narodnia Volya in the formation of Ukrainian people’ national consciousness and cultural memory during the period of the Ukrainian Central Council, the Ukrainian State, and the Directorate of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. Further research on the mentioned problem through the lens of individual editions of the regional periodical press at the time is important.
