As the world focuses more on renewable generation, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSMs) are seeing greater use in wind turbines and electric vehicle applications. To address the computational demands of full fidelity machine models using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or the expense of constructing an experimental test rig for practical performance analysis, adopting a dynamic hybrid electromagnetic FEA-dq model offers an accurate and computationally efficient means of analysing machine operation. This work aims to demonstrate what construction variables are essential to consider when building these models and how they influence the electromagnetic signals of the machine under both steady state and transient modes of operation. A conventional PMSM control strategy is employed in this work, and all sections focus exclusively on balanced PMSM operation under healthy conditions.
