Piano teaching is one of the most efficient factors of musical development and it contributes to the development of creative independence and of the intellectual background of a future professional. General piano teaching as a subject has the main purpose to create a well-educated musician in many areas. Starting with the middle of the 19th century researchers have dealt in their works with the problem of learning and development in the process of music making (especially, piano). Among the authors who distinguished themselves by their progressive ideas, we can bring out the name of the famous native pedagogue V. Gutor. His scientific work was mostly dedicated to the communicative particularities of the piano. This fact is reflected in a number of works of this author, namely: the role of the piano in the cultural development of the society was defined; for the first time, general piano pedagogy was considered as an independent direction in music education; the specificity of this discipline in the professional training of musicians of different specializations was studied; the basic elements of the General Piano discipline were established, different methods for studying the piano according to the purpose of learning were proposed. The present work introduces in scientific use a textological and study material of the sources referring to the study of the native musical culture from the 19th–20th centuries (manuscripts and lifetime editions by V. Gutor, letters and memoirs of E. Gutor-Lavrukhina).
