Background: biliary diseases and conditions associated with obstruction of the bile duct represent an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Objective: to characterize the patients with extrahepatic obstructive jaundice treated at the “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima” General Teaching Hospital of Cienfuegos, from January 2019 through December 2020. Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective case study was carried out with patients with a diagnosis of extrahepatic obstructive jaundice admitted to the department of surgery of the aforementioned hospital and during the period herein stated. The universe included 78 patients. The following variables were analyzed: age groups, sex, skin color, toxic and dietary habits, definite diagnosis and surgical procedure performed. Results: the 45 to 70 age group (35 patients for 44.9%) and the female sex (46 cases for 59.0%) prevailed. 73.0 % of the patients had white skin color. The most frequent toxic habit was exceptional or occasional alcoholism (62.8%), followed by a diet rich in fat (58.9%). Choledochal lithiasis was the commonest definite diagnosis in both sexes and in all age groups. 69 patients (88.5%) underwent surgery, with conventional surgery being the most widely used. Conclusions: choledochal lithiasis presented as the most frequent cause of obstructive jaundice in the patients of this case study. Most of them were operated on with conventional surgery.
