An online monitoring system based on the laser distance measuring method for the settlement of transmission tower at the goaf of colliery was put forward to deal with the common settlement and difficulty in monitoring. A sensor was equipped to acquire the distance between the laser distance measuring targets that were installed securely. The settlement value of four legs of tower could be obtained from the calculation of geometrical formulas. Compared with the traditional monitoring method of such settlement, the monitoring system proposed in this paper can quantify the settlement value and the error will be less than 2 mm. It can be applied to the monitoring of the mentioned settlement, guaranteeing the safe and stable operation of the transmission tower at the goaf of colliery.
