The paper will explore the theme of the modern museum analyzing the National Gallery of Modern Art extension in Rome by Luigi Cosenza. If we consider the genesis of the project and the time needed for the construction, we can understand the premature obsolescence of this work, belonging to the modern experience but historically located in what Tafuri will define “La gaia erranza degli ipermoderni”. The conception of a museum far from monumental ambitions becomes a fertile premise for the realization of a new museum idea, where typological innovation articulates a spatial sequence that finds in repetition and variation the formal themes that construct a "temporal figuration".
