Huaycos en 1987 en el distrito de Lurigancho-Chosica (Lima-Perú)
Abstract
Mudslides that affected the Lurigancho-Chosica district of Lima on March 9, 1987 were the cause of one of the greatest disasters known in Lima in the twentieth century. If the cause of this event is natural, the disaster is directly related to urban development which ignored the danger for many years. The article presents the consequences of the event, analyzes the causes and highlights the difficulties of crisis management. It also shows that more than 20 years after the event, actions to reduce the population vulnerability have not prevented that the population from moving back to affected areas. The actions implemented were limited to the construction of protection structures whose maintenance is not guaranteed.
