The present article identifies the geographic, economic and social combinations that were responsible for the formation of the identity of the municipality of Canoinhas and its importance for the formation of the architectural patrimony. For this, the concepts of territory, identity and architectural patrimony are worked as a fundamental theoretical reference. Based on ancient structures and processes, in natural, economic and social combinations, which are composed of endogenous and exogenous elements, a technical-productive structure was generated, based on production forces and social relations linked to the extractivism of mate grass and wood. This structure, among others, was directly responsible for the spreading, in the urban landscape in the municipality of Canoinhas, of the architectural heritage of wooden buildings.
