A decrease in the overall level of training of university applicants has a negative impact on the educational process as a whole. This problem is relevant not only in our country, but also abroad. For successful learning, it is necessary to adjust the «input» knowledge. One of the options for solving this issue is leveling courses. The purpose of the work is to analyze the problems of organizing leveling courses and develop recommendations for improving their effectiveness. Materials and methods. The research methods used are the analysis of psychological, pedagogical and methodological literature, the study and generalization of experience on the organization and conduct of leveling courses. Research results. Criteria are given for the levels of students’ readiness to study at a university in a particular discipline. The possible problems of introducing leveling courses into the educational process as a way to improve the initial training of first-year students are described. Approaches are proposed to increase the efficiency and improve the system for organizing leveling courses. Field of applying results. The results obtained can be applied in the educational process of higher education.
