This work presents the preparation and spectral characterization of five diphenylsulphone derived Schiff base ligands (L1–L5). Using the aforementioned ligands, Ni(II) complexes were synthesized in 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. The synthesized ligands and their complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, UV–Visible, FT-IR, ESI-MS, TGA analysis and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The results from the above analytical techniques revealed that the complexes are in an octahedral geometry. The antimicrobial activity of the synthesized Schiff base ligands and their metal complexes under study was carried out by using the agar well diffusion method. Further, the anticancer properties of the synthesized compounds are performed against MCF-7 cell line and human lung cancer cell line A-549 using Adriamycin as standard drug. The biological potency of the metal complexes were significant than their respective ligands.
