Weight loss, fever, and cardiac murmur in a 58-year old woman. A case report
Abstract
The diagnosis of cardiac tumors is found to be difficult when its main manifestations are non-specific constitutional symptoms. The case of a 58-year old woman who was admitted to hospital presenting with progressive weight loss, fever, and low intensity cardiac murmur (II-VI), is reported. By two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography a tumor mass in the left atrial wall (atrial myxoma) was detected; during diastole prolapsing towards the interior of the left ventricle. The clinical, immunological, and imaging elements of such tumors are pointed out.
