From 1772 Meléndez Valdes had links with the convent-school of St. Augustine in Salamanca, a community of Agustinian monks, where he had friends enthusiastic about poetry such as Diego González (Prior), Juan Fernández de Rojas, Andrés del Corral, Pedro Madariaga and Antonio José de Alba. During the period 1775-1780 they met regularly in the cell of the Prior Diego González. There grew a firm friendship, based on the same poetic and ideological tastes which had affinities with Jansenism. The present study attempts to outline the essential biographical characteristics of Antonio José de Alba and his relationship with Meléndez.
