INTERRELATIONS BETWEEN THE HUMAN CYTOMEGALOVIRUS INFECTION AND THE PERIODONTAL PATHOLOGY
Abstract
Aim of the study Identification of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in periodontal pockets in patients with chronic and aggressive periodontitis. Material and methods The study included 14 patients (23 males and 10 females) with chronic periodontitis (mean age value 39 ± 6.7 years old) and 19 patients with aggressive periodontitis (mean age value 30 ± 4.8 years old). The clinical examination assessed the plaque index, the gingival index, the gingival bleeding index, the probing depths, the clinical attachment, the clinic mobility. HCMV detection was realized with real time PCR kit (BIORON Diagnostics GmbH & Co. KG, Germany). Results The PD and clinical attachments were significantly higher in AgP group than in CP group (P<0.01). The microbiologic evaluations in patients with AgP were positive in 7.14% of the subjects. The presence of HCMV (p=0.0112) was statistically significant in patients with AgP and not in patients with CP. Conclusions The results of the study emphasize the necessity of understanding the role of herpesviruses in the etiopathogenesis of the periodontal disease as a risk factor, but not being decisive in the onset and evolution of the disease.
