Discussion about the article Que ismo é esse, Koellreutter? (What "ism" is this, Koellreutter?), written by César Guerra-Peixe, published in the journal Fundamentos in 1953, and reprinted in the same year in A Gazeta Musical e de todas as Artes in Lisbon. The analysis of this document discusses the participation of the Portuguese composer Fernando Lopes-Graça in the Brazilian debate around nationalist and twelve-tone music of the 1940s and 1950s. We start from the assumption that Guerra-Peixe's contact with the literary and musical work of Lopes-Graça was fundamental in consolidating his separation from the Música Viva movement and, especially, from Hans-Joachim Koellreutter. We relate the construction of our interpretative analysis to several authors, such as Carvalho (2006), Cascudo (2004, 1999), Tacuchian (2005), Silva (2001) and Kater (2001).
