Porcelain Fused to Metal Crown Sectioning and Removal

Abstract

Abstract In the preclinical phase of dental education, students may not have the opportunity to section and remove defective porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns. However, this skill is frequently needed in a clinical setting. The resources included, a video and a discussion, explain this procedure. This video is intended to be a visual learning tool for the dental student and should be considered in the context of comprehensive restorative dentistry and treatment planning. This video along with the discussion document may be used by individuals as a self-learning tool or as part of an integrated presentation relating to the replacement of defective porcelain fused to metal crowns. The video with the accompanying information was discussed in a simulation clinic practice session. After receiving these instructions, students performed the procedure on an extracted tooth in the simulation clinic. The video was purposed as a visual learning tool. As a result, students reported that they felt more familiar and comfortable with the procedure when performing it clinically. This practice session has been incorporated into the simulation clinic in the spring quarter in preparation for transition to patient care.
