MARKET STRUCTURE IMPACT ON INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE OF THE MOBILE TELEPHONY IN MAGHREB
Abstract
This paper deals, in the light of the SCP paradigm, with the relationship between the structure of the Mobile Telephony Industry (ITM) and the performance of its operators. The context of our study concerns the countries of the Maghreb, specifically Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. It covers the period from 2004 to 2014. The analysis focuses on econometric modeling using panel data. Its major results confirm the theoretical contributions of the classical SCP paradigm. They indicate that the concentration of the mobile phone industry in the Maghreb countries impacts positively the profitability of its operators. In addition, they believe that the latter is consolidating as a result of an increase in the number of telephone lines: the two fixed and mobile telephony services are therefore complementary in the countries studied. On the other hand, they point out that profitability is deteriorating as a result of the increase in Internet users. Thenthe Web is probably a substitute for the service of mobile telephony.
