Laryngeal candidiasis due to inhaled corticosteroid: a case report

Abstract

Inhaled corticosteroids effect on terminal bronchials. 90% of inhaled doses accumulates on upper respiratory tract and predispose candidial infection. 54-year-old asthmatic female patient using inhaled corticosteroids continuously for the last five years, admitted to our clinic with dysphonia and dysphagia. In indirect and laryngovideostroboscopic examination, diffuse patchy white exudate on erythematous mucosa was observed on both vocal folds, piriform sinuses, valleculas and oropharynx. Candida albicans was grown in oropharyngeal smear. The patient was diagnosed with laryngeal candidiasis due to inhaled corticosteroids.
