O modernismo historiográfico de António Sérgio: o caso da Introdução geográfico-sociológica à história de Portugal

Abstract

António Sérgio’s historical essayism has been extensively studied by scholars, who have privileged its epistemological dimension, that is, the proposal of an unsystematic, problematizing and rationalistic historical knowledge. This article seeks to deepen the essayism’s aesthetics that so far has been underexplored in the literature. Based on the study of Introdução geográfico-sociológica à história de Portugal (1941), I argue that some of its discursive elements, such as perspectivism, paratactic syntax, analytical structure and focus on experience rather than intentional action, deserve to be compared and related to the narrative strategies of Portuguese literary modernism.
