Rotating drums are used to grinding, drying, mixing, screening, granulating and other processes in environmental engineering. Depending on the nature of the process they can be equipped with additional devices to support the processes. In this work, the effect of drum surface roughness on the behaviour of the feed during drumming. For this purpose, three types of bottom coverings with grain size of 40, 80 and 120 were used. In the experiment the methodology of sequential image analysis using PIV software was applied. The results of theoretical calculations and experimental works have shown significant discrepancies (of approx. 46%) of speed characteristics for the minimum speed of the drum and smaller (amounting to approx. 5%) for the critical speed. In case of change in the particle size of the drum coverings, there were no significant differences in the behaviour of the feed.
