El culto a San Sebastián en la Merindad de Olite: Santo intercesor frente a las pestes en Tafalla en el ocaso de la Edad Media

Abstract

Mediante este artículo se pretende reflejar la rica y variada fenomenología litúrgica y devocional que se dio en torno a san Sebastián en la Merindad de Olite. Este santo fue considerado un intercesor con la divinidad en asuntos relacionados con la peste. Por este motivo, su culto durante la Baja Edad Media conoció un denodado impulso que lo llevó, incluso, a erigirse en patrón de no pocas villas y ciudades. Es el caso de Tafalla, donde san Sebastián fue tomado como santo patrón, siendo venerado con una devoción particular desde el siglo XV. This article aims to reflect the varied liturgical and devotional phenomenology that took place around Saint Sebastian in the Merindad of Olite. This saint was considered an intercessor with God in matters related to black dead and plagues. For this reason, his cult had a strong impulse during the Late Middle Ages. He became patron of many villages and towns. It is the case of Tafalla, where Saint Sebastian was taken as patron saint, being venerated with a particular devotion since the fifteenth century.
