Origami fabrication techniques for enhanced fiber reinforced composites: A review

Origami-inspired fiber-reinforced composites exhibit inherent properties that showcase the extraordinary response of reinforcing fibers to stimuli-induced folding. This paper delves into origami-inspired fabrication techniques, meticulously integrating them into fiber-reinforced composites, with emphasis on kirigami and Miura-ori folding patterns, and other folding patterns like waterbomb, Yoshimura, and Kresling. The study highlights exemplary manufacturing methodologies, leveraging advanced techniques like electrospinning, 3D printing, and state-of-the-art 4D printing to create intricately engineered structures. Furthermore, the incorporation of shape memory polymers and hydrophilic polymers within the origami framework is thoroughly examined, revealing their transformative potential in imparting shape-shifting and hydrophilic properties to composites. Ultimately, this paper explores diverse applications of these meticulously engineered fiber-reinforced composites, unlocking their exceptional capabilities across multifaceted domains. This paper epitomizes the fusion of origami principles and material innovation, fostering a paradigm shift in composite materials. Incorporating various folding techniques enhances their potential to revolutionize structural design and enable novel applications in numerous industries.
