This article analyse the preferences and constraints that underlie the choice of fields of study made by 2333 students enrolled at the University of Trento in the academic year 2014/15 through a family of statistical models known in the literature as Discrete Choice Models, Random Utility Models (McFadden, 1973).The analysis takes into account the factors that lead a person to enrol in a course of study. In determining the final choice, next to the complex intertwining of ascriptive, acquisitive and motivational factors, there is an equally strong component played by assessments on available alternatives.
