Three major phospholipid fractions were isolated from Mycoplasma laidlawii, strain B, grown in lipid-free medium. Two of these fractions were shown to contain covalently bound glucose, and had molar ratios of P:sugar:glycerol:fatty acid close to 1:1:1:2. They differed somewhat in their fatty acid compositions. Products of mild deacylation and of partial acid hydrolysis indicated both to be salt forms of phosphatidyl glucose.Another major fraction not structurally identified yielded data suggestive of a compound resembling cardiolipin or of a phosphatidyl glycerophosphate. Small amounts of nitrogen-containing phospholipids, but no sulfolipids, were detected.
