The traditionally denotes Lerouge case of Émile Gaboriau as the first French detective novel. The novel opens with the murder of a woman, the widow Lerouge. Quickly suspicion focuses on a young man, but the alleged perpetrator appears to have a double. We can find the same elements in Jean Diable from Paul Féval. Gaboriau knew of this novel and was the disciple of Féval. It is then brought to question the place of this pioneering work which deserves the place of first detective novel.
