Abstract A building energy management system can be defined as a building automation system that can facilitate demand response by controlling building‐side energy resources. Here, a real‐time Energy Management System (EMS) is developed to reduce the energy costs charged by the demand charge tariff for a specific commercial building that consists of a public laundry. The authors model the public laundry energy management problem as a multi‐task scheduling problem and design a set of algorithms to heuristically control the operations of washing machines and clothes dryers by taking into account the customer‐specified task requirements and the laundry owner's budget. Numerical case studies are conducted to validate the proposed EMS.
