Some in - service pipelines were not designed to transport sour crude oil, which brought corrosion problems. To solve this problem, the corrosion environment of sour crude oil transportation pipeline was simulated by using high - temperature and high - pressure reactor. The corrosion behaviors of X52 and X65 pipeline steels in different kinds of crude oil, different temperature, different flow rate, different pressure, different water content and different defects were studied by laboratory test. The changes of two kinds of pipeline steel before and after corrosion were observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscope. The effective transportation life of pipeline was estimated by the corrosion rate at the most severe corrosion condition. Results showed that with the increase of sulfur content, temperature, flow rate, water content and defect area, the corrosion rate of X52 and X65 pipeline steel in sour crude oil increased significantly, but the change of pressure factor had little effect on X52 and X65 pipeline steel. Under the same test conditions, X65 pipeline steel exhibited better corrosion resistance than X52 pipeline steel, and it was estimated that the effective transportation life of X52 pipeline steel was significantly lower than that of X65 pipeline steel.
