Pyrolysis-gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) was used to study the thermal stability of the bio-oil components as the pyrolysis temperature increased from 100 °C to 550 °C. The peak area changes of 66 typical compounds identified by GC/MS are classified into 9 trends with the increasing of pyrolysis temperature. The decrease of the peak areas, indicating the corresponding compounds show their thermal instability, almost covers all the compound types. And many compounds (including some phenols, aldehydes, ketones and esters) do not show the decrease, indicating that they have good thermal stability. Results indicates that many compounds contained in bio-oil would have good thermal stability when they are heated as single compound samples after being separated in a certain way, although bio-oil has a poor thermal stability when it is treated as a mixture. It is hoped that the research results can have reference significance for the subsequent refining of bio-oil.
