This article seeks to reveal and problematize transnational conditions and practices based on a reading of the working papers and identity documents of Chilean Merchant Marine crewmen from the small port city of Corral (Region of Los Ríos, Chile). The documents discussed are the minimum papers needed to permit and guarantee the embarkation of crewmembers. Throughout the text, I distinguish the particularities of the documents themselves, some historical background information regarding them, and the processes for obtaining them. In revealing the condition of work and displacement through an analysis of these documents, we can show nuances of the intersections of scales of interaction, spaces-places and policies, that end up affecting persons in concrete places and specific times. Furthermore, the documents allow us to problematize the transnational conditions in relation to the work and flow of the crewmembers, as citizens and as workers, thus situating the margins of the state and the hierarchies of subordinations among transnational, national and local planes.
